首先，征求导师意见，导师同意后，在外文数据库中查找跟自己研究方向相关的教授，发EMAIL给他，问是否接受访问学生，同时随心附上CV，如果导师对你感兴趣，会询问你一些基本情况，告诉你他目前的研究项目等等。然后，你可以跟他谈谈在那边的生活补贴的问题。美国一般要求提交申请表、两封推荐信以及TOEFL &IELTS，基本上英语随便考个分数就行了。加拿大那边跟美国那边差不多。

亚洲如日本、新加坡、泰国那边要更加容易些，曾经联系过一个日本教授，他说英语过六级就可以过去了，简单得很。但是我个人认为，去的话还是最好找一个英语为官方语言的国家，这样至少不需要再浪费精力学一门其他语言。毕竟工科学生掌握语言的目的就是为了本专业的研究，没必要把太多心思花在语言上。 建议08秋季的学生尽量跟国外导师提出要在那边呆两年，因为这样更容易加入他们的研究团队，做一个完整的研究课题。回国以后，可以再花半年完成论文。算起来三年半博士毕业。也没有耽误了自己的时间。

可能联合培养的生活费并不需要自己负担，但是自己必须也要有足够的财力证明来获得签证，金额按国别不同而不同，一年大概要有几万块的资金证明最好。这里，我就再罗嗦几句：其实，你如果之前就了解这个情况，那么你在最开始联系导师的时候最好就提出来，非常有可能导师会承诺你一个RA岗位来替你出具这个财力证明。这样的好处是1.你不需要花费家里的钱或者借别人的钱，2.你在国外的生活费会相当富裕。大致估算了一下，两年下来你可以带回国几万块钱的零花钱。比在国内生憋出几篇EI文章获得的奖励要多得多。

我还要重申一下，就是我只有申请的经验，我也真不知道在国外做访问学者是什么感觉。你们可以通过xiaonei.com 或者FACEBOOK来联系下国外的校友，问问他们在那边的情况。 还有一个值得探讨的问题是：在国外呆两年的话，可能会出现论文成果的归属权的问题。如果你在国外发的文章，重大不承认，那么你就得回国后凑齐三篇EI才能毕业，可能也要耽误你一些时间。我个人的想法是：可以在国外用国内师兄弟的实验数据跟那边导师合作写文章，争取把自己、第一作者的单位写成重庆大学，这样的话，回国就不会有发文章的压力了。毕竟高水平的期刊的投稿周期太长。

下面给一个第一次跟导师联系的例子(建议这个例子中的任何一句话都不要照搬，以免国外导师同时收到多封重大的EMAIL都是一样的，使得自己和重大的声誉受损)：

Dear Professor XXX,

I am writing to ask about the possibility of applying for XXX. I am XXX, a candidate for doctor's degree at Chongqing University, China. Now I have an opportunity to study abroad supported by China Scholarship Council. I am writing to you to see if you can give me a chance to study under your advice as a visiting doctoral candidate.

I am very interested in the areas of XXXX. And now I intend to conduct a study on the topic of XXXXX. We do want to introduce some new technology and methods using in XXX. And I hope that,in the future, we could apply these new technologies in the study of XXX in China, especially,in Chongqing. I believe that it will be very helpful to my academic career if I have the chance to conduct my research work under your advice.

This programme is a type of co-educate PhD programme supported by China Scholarship Council. The study period can be 24 months at most. I have to accomplish my doctor degree back to China, all I need is an offical invitation letter from you. The CSC fellowship could cover most of the living fees.The attached file is my brief CV. Please advise if it is good for me to apply to your department. Thanks for your consideration in advance! 最后一定记得在他给你寄邀请函之前跟他讲明白推荐信上要写哪些东西。比如下面UVic的例子：
